Understanding Player Statistics

The player shot history view shows detailed statistics:

Basic stats:

  • FGM/FGA: Field goals made / attempted
  • FG%: Field goal percentage

By shot type:

  • 2P: Two-point field goals (inside the arc)
  • 3P: Three-point field goals (beyond the arc)
  • FT: Free throws

Advanced stats:

Tracking Shots on the Court

During a game, track shots by tapping on the court:

  1. Make sure you have active players on court (tap the roster area)
  2. Double-tap where the shot was taken
  3. A shot marker appears
  4. Select the player who took the shot
  5. Mark as made (green) or missed (red)

The app automatically determines:

  • 2-pointer vs 3-pointer based on the shot location
  • Free throws are tracked separately using the FT button
  • Toggle "Layup" to mark close-range shots as layups

Shot markers show:

  • Player's jersey number
  • Green = made, Red = missed
  • Size indicates shot type (larger = 3-pointer)

Tip: Need to add a player mid-game? Tap the "+" button in the roster area to create a new player without leaving the game.

Editing or Deleting Shots

To edit a shot that's already been recorded:

  1. Long-press on any shot marker on the court
  2. The shot editor appears with options:

- Change made/missed status

- Change the player

- Reposition the shot (drag it)

- Delete the shot

  1. Tap "Save" to confirm changes or "Delete" to remove the shot

This is useful for correcting mistakes made during fast-paced tracking.

Understanding Shot Markers

Shot markers on the court display important information:

Colors:

  • Green circle = Made shot
  • Red circle = Missed shot

The jersey number of the shooter appears in the center.

Size indicates shot type:

  • Smaller circles = 2-point shots (inside the arc)
  • Larger circles = 3-point shots (beyond the arc)
  • Free throws appear at the free throw line

When filtered, only matching shots are shown and non-matching shots are dimmed or hidden.

Filtering Shots

You can filter which shots are displayed on the court:

Filter options (in the shot history panel):

  • Shot type: 2P, 3P, FT, or All
  • Result: Made, Missed, or All
  • Player: Select specific player or all players
  • Quarter: Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, or All

Filtered views help you analyze specific aspects of the game:

  • See only 3-point attempts
  • View just one player's shots
  • Compare first half vs second half performance

Using the Shot History Panel

The shot history panel shows a timeline of all shots in the game:

Accessing the panel:

  • In landscape: It's visible on the side
  • In portrait: Swipe up from the bottom or tap the history button

Panel features:

  • Chronological list of all shots
  • Shows player, shot type, result, and quarter
  • Tap any shot to highlight it on the court
  • Filter controls at the top

The panel updates in real-time as you track shots.

Tracking Substitutions

HoopCharts tracks which players are on the court throughout the game.

Starting lineup:

  • When you start a game, select your 5 starting players
  • These players appear in the "on court" section

Making substitutions:

  • Tap the roster/bench area during a game
  • Select the player coming out
  • Select the player going in
  • The substitution is recorded with the current game clock time

Substitutions appear in the shot history timeline alongside shots, so you can see exactly when lineup changes happened.

Editing substitutions:

  • Tap any substitution in the timeline to edit it
  • You can change the players involved or delete the substitution

Why it matters:

  • When you record a shot, only players currently on court are shown
  • This keeps shot attribution accurate throughout the game

Game Clock & Scoreboard

Using the Game Clock

The game clock helps you track time during games:

Starting/stopping:

  • Tap the clock to start the countdown
  • Tap again to pause
  • The clock pauses automatically when the app goes to background

The clock counts down from your selected period length (8 or 12 minutes typically).

When the clock reaches 0:00, you'll be prompted to advance to the next quarter.

Adjusting Time and Period

To adjust the game clock or period:

  1. Tap the time display or the period indicator
  2. The clock editor appears
  3. Adjust the minutes and seconds
  4. Change the current quarter if needed
  5. Modify period length for the game
  6. Tap "Done" to apply changes

This is useful for:

  • Correcting the time after stoppages
  • Starting mid-quarter
  • Adjusting for overtime periods

Tracking Opponent Score

While your team's score is calculated automatically from tracked shots, you need to manually track the opponent's score:

On the scoreboard:

  • Tap the "+" next to opponent score to add points
  • Tap the "-" to subtract points

Or tap the opponent score to open the editor and enter the exact score.

Quick scoring: Long-press (or right-click) on the opponent score to see a menu with common adjustments: +1, +2, +3, -1, -2, -3, or Reset.

The scoreboard shows both team scores and the current quarter.

Quarter-by-Quarter Scoring

HoopCharts tracks scoring by quarter automatically.

View quarter breakdown:

  • Open game statistics (tap Stats button)
  • The scoreboard at the top shows each quarter's score
  • See how scoring changed throughout the game

Quarter scores are preserved even if you go back and edit shots from earlier periods.

The final score reflects all tracked shots and opponent score entries.

Statistics & Export

Viewing Game Statistics

To view statistics for a game:

  1. During a game, tap the "Stats" button
  2. Or from <strong>Load Game</strong>, open a game then tap Stats

The stats view shows:

  • Team totals (FG, 2P, 3P, FT percentages)
  • Individual player breakdowns
  • Quarter-by-quarter scoring
  • Shot distribution analysis

Use the filters to view stats for specific quarters or halves.

Understanding Shooting Percentages

HoopCharts calculates several shooting percentages:

FG% (Field Goal Percentage):

  • All shots made / All shots attempted
  • Includes 2-pointers and 3-pointers, excludes free throws

2P% (Two-Point Percentage):

  • 2-point shots made / 2-point shots attempted

3P% (Three-Point Percentage):

  • 3-point shots made / 3-point shots attempted

FT% (Free Throw Percentage):

  • Free throws made / Free throws attempted

eFG% (Effective Field Goal Percentage):

  • Adjusts for the extra value of 3-pointers
  • Formula: (FGM + 0.5 x 3PM) / FGA
  • Better for comparing players with different shot selections

Exporting to PDF

Create a printable game summary:

  1. Open the game statistics view
  2. Tap the Share button

  • Shot charts (optional)

PDFs are great for sharing with players, parents, or adding to game files.

Exporting to CSV

Export raw data for spreadsheet analysis:

  1. Open the game statistics view
  2. Tap the Share button
  3. Select "Export CSV"
  4. Choose where to save the file

The CSV includes:

  • One row per shot
  • Player name and number

Recipients can import your game using the code or by tapping the link on their device.

Note: Share codes expire after a period of time.

Importing a Shared Game

To import a game shared by someone else:

Option 1: Using the share code

  1. Go to <strong>Settings</strong>
  2. Find "Import Shared Game"
  3. Enter the 6-character code
  4. Tap "Import"

Option 2: Using the share link

  • You'll match or create players
  • All shot data is preserved

Using Deep Links

HoopCharts supports deep links for easy game sharing.

How it works:

  1. When someone shares a game, they get a link like:

hoopshots://g/ABC123

  1. Tapping this link on a device with HoopCharts installed opens the app
  2. The import confirmation screen appears automatically

If the app isn't installed, the link won't work (there's no web fallback).

Deep links make sharing easier than manually entering codes.
